Homemade Pregnancy or Maternity Halloween Costumes

Halloween is a time to put on a silly, scary, funny or creative Halloween costume and attend a party, trick-or-treat or simply give out candy. Just because you're pregnant doesn't mean you can't get in on the fun. In fact, you can have even more fun as you can use your Belly as part of your costume.

Note: My wife and I are currently expecting our first child Mid-November. We have brain-stormed these costume ideas as possible costumes for her.

Using Your Belly As The Costume
This is our favorite idea as you incorporate the belly as part of the costume. In this case you can draw/sketch creative things on your belly. If you know someone with artistic skills then this is a great costume as it can really turn out good. Simply get them to draw something that takes up your entire belly. You want to ensure that the entire belly is colored as it makes it look more part of the costume. If you can't find anyone with good artistic skill this can be done by printing out an image and than tracing it onto the belly and later filling it in with face-paints.

With this costume simply grab an old shirt and cut out the belly from the shirt. Once the belly is colored (matching the shirt, if possible) you will have a very cool looking costume. Another alternative is to simply wear something to complement the drawings without cutting the shirt. However, with this you will need to be creative on how the shirt is held up to show the belly off.

Some creative ideas include
Pumpkin / Jack O Lantern - Orange with eyes, mouth and nose colored as if cut-out.
Basketball - Orange with black stripes
Softball - White with red zig-zag stripes
Radioactive symbol - Radioactive triangular symbol in black with rest of the belly in yellow
X-ray photo - Belly in black with white x-ray of baby
Ultrasound photo of baby - Belly in black with baby in green
Inside Looking Out - Draw an image from the babies perspective. ie: Baby with hands pressed up against the belly looking out - Belly in red with skin colored hands and face
Logo from favorite sports team - Draw your favorite sports team logo
Earth - Draw the earth on the belly
Speed Bump - Draw the speed bump road sign on the belly
Beach Ball - Draw a beach ball on your belly

The ideas for this costume are simply endless you have to just think of something you'd like to put on your belly and go from there!

Side Note: She has chosen to get this costume here. However, if we are attending more than one party we will be drawing one of the image above onto her belly!

A Guide To Pregnancy Halloween Costumes

If you are past the fifth month of pregnancy you will probably have a fairly good sized "baby bump". This means that you probably won't fit very many costumes as you normally would. If this is the case you have two alternatives: to either buy a maternity costume or to buy a "plus-sized" costume. The plus sized costumes will work if you normally fit plus-sized clothing. However, if you don't then the plus sized will be "plus sized" everywhere... which makes it just awkward. Here are a few maternity or pregnancy Halloween costume options to consider.

Normal Maternity or Pregnancy Costumes

bun in oven pregnant costume Another alternative to this is the bun-in-the-oven costumes. This costume makes a great couples costume as the dad goes as the baker and the mom goes as the 'oven'. This is a fun reference that everyone will get and think is pretty funny and clever.

Using your Belly as the costume
The final option is to use your belly as part of the costume. For this alternative pregnancy costume you simply paint something on your belly with face paint to create your costume. This can be as simple as a jack-o-lantern or basketball to something totally different like a peace sign.

Remember, Halloween is all about dressing up and having fun. If you can let yourself go and have a good time then dressing up with your belly will be much more fun!
